Traditional Greek sweets

Traditional Greek sweets

Traditional Greek sweets fall into several categories: a wealth of confections made with olive oil evolved as a result of the traditional fasting calendar. “Phyllo”-pastries, filled with nuts or phyllo-pastries filled with semolina-based cream, and flavored with sugar or Greek honey syrup, are among the most common traditional Greek sweets.

Another important category of traditional Greek sweets are the unique “spoon sweets”. Spoon sweets are preserves of wither seasonal Greek fresh fruits, young, immature nuts (still soft in their shells), or even certain vegetables, such as baby eggplant and pumpkin, put up in simple sugar syrup. They are called spoon sweets because they are served in a small plate and eaten with a tea-spoon.
