The 12th International Wine Competition of Thessaloniki was successfully completed, giving strong evidence that is has become a major institution for Greek wine. The Competition is organized by the Wine Producers Association of the Northern Greece Vineyard under the auspices of the O.I.V. (International Organization of Vine and Wine) and took place in Thessaloniki from March 12th - 14th, 2012.

A solid proof of the success of the Organisation is that according to the S.A.Q in Quebec - Canada, the Thessaloniki International Wine Competition was ranked an `A` status among the top international wine competitions. 35 foreign and Greek wine tasters (enologists, sommeliers and journalists) tasted 609 wines from Greece and 8 other countries: Bulgaria, Brazil, Cyprus, Germany, Italy, Romania, Slovakia and Turkey.

The main characteristic of this year’s competition was the excellent quality of the samples submitted, a great number of which achieved the rate for a medal. Nevertheless, only 176 medals and 9 special awards were given, corresponding to no more than 30% of the samples, according to the O.I.V. criterion:

- 2 Grand Gold medals
- 101 Gold medals
- 73 Silver medals

In the past 12 years world class wine professionals have accepted the invitation to judge at the International Thessaloniki Wine Competition and even before the competition was over declared an interest in being invited back, totally fascinated by Greek wine. Turning important people into dedicated ambassadors in just a few days, could well be the ultimate proof that IWCT is now an integral part of the Modern Greek Wine Renaissance.
