Oenorama 2012

Greece’s premier wine trade exhibition

Athens, 16-19 March 2012

Now is the best time to invest in Greek wine and there is no better place to start doing so than the Oenorama wine trade exhibition, which will take place in Athens next March. Oenorama is the biggest showcase of Greek wines in the world with more than 150 participating wineries. All appellation areas are invariably represented at the show which is the most important rendezvous of the Greek wine industry. This is the 11th edition of the show, which first took place in 1994. Ouzo, tsipouro and other Greek spirit producers are also present, as are a number of supplier companies for viticulture and oenology.

As always, the show is expecting many visitors from abroad so all information is available in English as well. The “Oenorama Wine Gallery” is of special interest to the foreign visitor, as an exhibition-within-the-exhibition, where some 300 of the show’s best wines are exhibited in a strictly for professionals-only permanent tasting. It is recommended one start their visit there. Other dedicated tastings are organized by both the wine industry and individual growers.

Despite the economic crisis Greece is going through, the wine industry is responding with enthusiasm to the show, which will be sold-out. Winemakers from all over Greece and thousands of wines await the visitor to this unique event.

Maybe Greek Wine will be the next big thing as it is making a big impact in several markets these days, notably in North America, Belgium and Russia. In the United States, Master Sommeliers are placing Greek wines on their wine lists, wine magazines are publishing long articles on the virtues of indigenous Greek varietals and both the Wine Spectator and the Wine Advocate now have dedicated tasters of Greek wines which are scored almost monthly. At long last non-Greek import and distribution companies are adding Greek references to their listings as Greek wine goes mainstream.

As is the case with all trends, those who ride the wave from the start are the ones who stand to gain the most. Already many of the premium wine producers are spoken for, but there is a lot of new talent out there and many wineries are still looking for agents and importers.
