One of the most historic wines the world has ever known, the famed sweet Malvasia wine, is making a comeback following the recognition of a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) wine-producing zone for the production of PDO Monemvassia-Malvasia wine.

The varietal composition of the PDO Monemvassia-Malvasia sweet wine is Monemvassia (at least 51%), Assyrtiko, Asproudes and Kydonitsa, either for plain vine-dried wine (vine-dried grapes, vin de raisin passerillé) or for wine liqueur (fortified wine) from vine-dried grapes (vine-dried, vin de liqueur de raisin passerillé).

For the first time in 16 years, a new PDO wine-producing area has been established in Greece. The PDO Monemvassia-Malvasia wine region includes the areas of Monemvassia, Asopos, Vies and Molai, in the southeastern tip of the Province of Laconia.
