The vineyards of Lemnos

LemnosVineyard

The vineyards of Lemnos host Muscat of Alexandria vines, mostly on rolling terrain along shallow valleys on the island’s hilly western side. Around 1,250 acres are cultivated, of which 90-95% is taken up by Muscat of Alexandria and the rest is accounted for by Limnio, the ancient Greek red cultivar locally known as “Kalambaki”. The variety was named after the island following its transplant elsewhere, where it became known by its place of origin. Normally, harvesting on Lemnos takes place between mid-Septembr and the end of the month.
