The Mediterranean Diet was declared “intangible cultural heritage of mankind” by UNESCO (5th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee at Nairobi, Kenya), after a request, made by Greece together with Spain, Italy and Morocco.

"We are very pleased with the decision, which responds to an undeniable reality. The Mediterranean diet is considered as the healthiest way of eating, but has established itself as a philosophy and lifestyle as well. Thus opens horizons for the promotion of Greek products and local food of the islands and our regions. The purpose is to promote the identity of the Greek Mediterranean diet, but also and the local, traditional diets who come together, as the already renowned Cretan diet” Mr. Costas Skandalidis, Greek Minister of Hellenic Ministry of Rural Development and Food said.
"The Mediterranean diet can and should be a key tool for development, which can express a special, unique way of life as a part of Greek heritage (historical, social and cultural)", said Mr. Paul Geroulanos, Greek Minister of Culture and Tourism.

Hellenic Ministry of Rural Development and Food the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in cooperation with similar organizations and the National Commission for the Mediterranean-Greek Diet will draw a strategy in order to interlace Greece with the Mediterranean Diet inextricably.
