"BONJOUR QUÉBEC!": SAQ & NWOG Working Together

Cellier SAQ

Greece is very excited to start a promotional campaign in Canada next spring in conjunction with the SAQ (Société des Alcools du Québec). “We believe there is a big potential for Greek wine in the Quebec market and I think that this promotion will be a turning point for us in Quebec”, notes Sofia Perpera, Director of the Greek Wine Bureau of North America.

And Sofia isn΄t just saying that, as there is a strong old-world connection between Greece and Quebec due to the large number of French-trained, Greek winemakers that have returned to Greece to use their classical training to bring new life to Greek indigenous varieties. It΄s these native Greek varieties that have been gaining the attention of trade and consumers around the world and the SAQ will be doing their part to help establish the category of Greek wine in Quebec.

The promotion will include floor displays in 90 SAQ stores from April 28th to May 26th. During the week of May 13-18th, several Greek winemakers will be in Canada to participate in training for SAQ store personnel, 2 days of in-store tastings at the same 90 SAQ stores and a Grand Tasting for the trade. Keep checking to see what other activities are happening!

To support the promotion, the SAQ΄s Cellier Magazine΄s May issue will feature the renaissance that has taken place in the Greek wine sector. The SAQ recently sent two of their prominent buyers to Greece to check out the revival in Greek winemaking and seek out wines that represent Greece΄s transformation into a modern winemaking culture. During their first trip to Greece, Gilles Goulet (Director of Specialty Products) and Esther Degorce-Dumas (European Buyer for Specialty Products), tasted their way through all of the major regions of Greece and more. Is there a better way to see and experience a country?
